First Literacy Scholar: Angel

Angel attended Boston Public Schools where she was bullied to an extreme extent, leading to a broken hip that her bullies were not held accountable for. She endured a long and painful recovery. Despite excelling in math, teachers discouraged her and even gave her a failing grade despite her work completion. The stress of the ostracization led to further struggling and an eating disorder, forcing her to drop out of school. After she had her son, she had renewed joy and motivation to provide a better life for him. Determined to make her son proud she signed up with Julie’s Family Learning Program, an adult education program that reinvigorated her drive to be academically successful. In this program she was treated with respect her previous teachers and classmates had not. With the scholarship from First Literacy, Angel plans to attend Bunker Hill Community College and work towards her goal of becoming a guidance counselor. She hopes to be a light for students who may be going through something similar to what she did.
