First Literacy Appoints New Chairman of the Board

jim-nolan-headshot-new-chairman-of-the-board-first-literacyBOSTON, MA – First Literacy is pleased to announce Jim Nolan, previously First Literacy‘s Vice President of the Board has been appointed as new Chairman of the Board. Effective July 1, Nolan succeeds Jeff Beale, who recently stepped down after serving as Chairman for the past fourteen years. Jeff will remain on the board and be a key member of the executive committee.

“I am honored to step into this role,” stated Nolan. “Under Jeff’s leadership First Literacy has realized tremendous growth and I look forward to continuing this growth enriching the lives of more adult learners in Boston and throughout Massachusetts. I’m excited to continue this essential work as the Chairman of the Board.”

Nolan is Managing Director of Business and Client Development for Citi Securities Services business and has served on the First Literacy Board of Directors for 15 years. Nolan has been a key member of the leadership team at First Literacy serving on the Executive Committee and as the Co-Chair of First Literacy’s Spelling Bee, the organizations largest fundraising event that raises over $250,000 annually.

“Jim’s long history on the Board at First Literacy and dedication to furthering our mission makes him an ideal person for this role. I look forward to working closely with Jim to continue helping adults throughout Massachusetts improve their literacy skills so they can succeed in every aspect of their lives.” said Terry Witherell, First Literacy Executive Director.

In his new role, Nolan will continue to drive a key focus on First Literacy’s commitment to supporting the continuum of Adult Basic Education through free professional development workshops for teachers, grants for innovative new adult literacy programs, and scholarships for adults continuing to higher education or vocational training.
