It’s standard practice for us to keep track of First Literacy Scholarship recipients. We love to see how a little leg-up from us helps our Scholars reach big milestones and achieve their goals.
But our staff member Michael Feher has been keeping track on one of our Scholars since long before he even applied.
Before he became our Director of Programs, Michael taught English for Speakers of Other Languages at Jamaica Plain Adult Learning Program, where he had Dave Du as a student. Michael kept tabs on Dave through the years, and when his name showed up among the applicants for First Literacy Scholarships, he sang Dave’s praises. One of the main characteristics we look for in our scholars is Michael calls Dave “a model of persistence.” They had the chance to reconnect in person in 2014, when Dave received a First Literacy Scholarship and headed to school.
Now we’re proudly watching him work his way through courses at Roxbury Community College, and everyone here at First Literacy feels as invested in Dave’s future as his former teacher.
