Executive Director, Skye Kramer
As Executive Director, Ms. Kramer, who has over 20 years experience in nonprofit management, is responsible for the management and operations of the organization, including all programming, fundraising, finances, communications, and staffing. She has been at First Literacy since July 2010. Her prior experience includes serving as Executive Director of the Brookline Education Foundation, an organization that supports the public schools of Brookline.
Director of Professional Development, Lenore Balliro
Ms. Balliro has worked with adult basic education programs in New England for over 25 years. Before joining First Literacy, she held positions at the Adult Literacy Resource Institute/SABES and World Education. Her area of specialization is professional development, and she brings experience as an ESOL and ABE instructor, program director, editor, and education consultant to her work with teachers and programs. Ms. Balliro is especially interested in the intersection of expressive arts and the acquisition of literacy and language. Contact: email@example.com
Program Manager, Evonne Peters
As Program Manager, Ms. Peters is responsible for the First Literacy Lab and scholarship initiatives. With 20 years’ experience in teaching, training, and education administration, her previous positions include Education Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator at Pathways, Inc. (formerly Operation Bootstrap). Ms. Peters has taught ABE classes at several programs on the North Shore and college level reading and writing courses at North Shore Community College. She holds certifications as a national Student Achievement in Reading (STAR) Trainer and in the Wilson Reading System. She conducts trainings for adult educators in reading instruction and assessment and serves as a member of the Massachusetts ABE Teacher Licensure Review Panel.
Development and Events Manager, Jamie Ayer
As Development and Events Manager, Ms. Ayer is responsible for managing all aspects of fundraising, including researching and developing winning grant proposals and planning large and small events. Her love of reading and desire for meaningful work make First Literacy a natural fit. Prior to joining the team at First Literacy, she worked at Montserrat College of Art and Plummer Youth Promise (formerly Plummer Home for Boys) in similar development roles.
Staff Associate (Program Communications and Database Management), Paula Dincer
Ms. Dincer discovered a passion for working with adult learners as a part-time ESOL teacher and private tutor with the Cambridge Literacy Project, and was introduced to First Literacy through its Professional Development workshops. She adds her skills in program support and database management to the First Literacy team. Her prior experience covers 20-plus years working with foreign nationals in a management role, including a decade as executive director of a US-based nonprofit supporting progressive education in Turkey.
Administrative Assistant, Adriana Echeverria
When Ms. Echeverria was asked if she wanted to volunteer in office administration at First Literacy she was happy to say yes, since she has over 15 years of administrative experience from her native El Salvador. At First Literacy she was surprised to learn how many people work in adult literacy in order to help immigrants like herself. “Here I am able to add another grain of sand to build a castle for all immigrants who come to this country and want to build their own castle, which in our original countries we can only dream about.” After one year she was hired by First Literacy and still feels blessed to be here to help and learn from others.
