Kayla dropped out of high school when she was in twelfth grade. She was pregnant and just a few classes short of the graduation requirements. Her intent was to finish her high school classes, but once her son was born the demands of being a single mother took over.
Working hard to support her family, Kayla never gave up on her dream of becoming a nurse. Inspired by the nurses she saw daily while working as an administrative coordinator at Beverly Hospital, she knew nursing was her calling.
With unwavering support from her husband and encouragement from colleagues and family, Kayla took the necessary steps to pursue a degree in nursing. Studying diligently, she passed the HiSET in March of 2023 and wasted no time applying to North Shore Community College.
Determined to become a Register Nurse in the emergency department, the First Literacy Scholarship is helping pave the way for a better future for Kayla and her family.
