First Literacy Scholar: Luis

Luis attended elementary school in his small village in El Salvador, but high school and university required travel to a bigger town, a trip that exposed him to weekly gang attacks. After his report to the police, more serious threats forced him to abandon his family and his position at the university and seek asylum in the United States. Luis took ESOL classes at the Cambridge Community Learning Center and this spring completed their Bridge to College program. His goal in El Salvador had been to become a math teacher; here he is pursuing his love of numbers in the accounting program at Bunker Hill Community College and hopefully later at UMass Boston.
