First Literacy Scholar: Qiaomin

Qiaomin is from China, where she attended college before moving to the U.S. in 2019. During the coronavirus pandemic, Qiaomin lost her part-time job and her grandfather was diagnosed with stomach cancer. Being the only family member to speak any English, she took on the role of translator for her grandfather during his medical appointments. Qiaomin was unsure of her ability to take on this role due to her limited ability to speak English, but knew she had to be there for her grandfather. It was this experience that led her to decide she wanted to pursue a career in the medical field. Qiaomin is currently enrolled in the Medical Radiography Program at Bunker Hill Community College. She is also doing clinical training and rotations at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She is planning to graduate in May 2024.
