First Literacy Scholar: Emani

Emani grew up with a deep love for learning. Raised by her grandmother due to her parents’ struggles with addiction, Emani experienced severe instability during her adolescence. She often lacked necessities like food and transportation, which made it difficult to attend school. Dealing with these struggles at home, she eventually fell behind in her studies.

When the pandemic hit during her freshman year of high school, the challenges multiplied. She was unable to attend virtual classes and was removed from high school at the age of 18. When Emani became pregnant and welcomed her son she was brought great joy, but also somehow found herself in a deep depression. Her son was later diagnosed with Autism, adding another layer of concern and responsibility. Determined to take control of her life, Emani committed herself to rebuilding her self-esteem and sense of purpose.

It was during this time that Emani was introduced to Julie’s Family Learning Program. With her son enrolled in the program’s daycare, Emani was able to focus on her studies and rediscover her love of learning. She thrived in the supportive environment and graduated with her GED.

This fall, Emani will begin her journey at Roxbury Community College, pursuing an associate degree in Liberal Arts. The scholarship from First Literacy will provide her with the opportunity and stability to continue her education and build a brighter future. Inspired by her own experiences and the educators who helped her along the way, she hopes to one day work in a teaching or mentorship role, guiding others who may be facing similar struggles.
