Kamrunnaher grew up in a small village in Bangladesh called Lakshmipur. The oldest of five children, she was always focused on being a great role model for her siblings. Very diligent in school, she was one of only five women in her village to be accepted into the most renowned university in the state. While in Bangladesh Kamrunnaher worked full-time as a government officer to support her husband and two daughters. When she and her family received the news that their United States Visas were approved, her daughters were elated, but Kamrunnaher was scared to leave her home and the stability that she had worked so hard to achieve. In 2023 she made the decision to come to the U.S. with her husband and two daughters. When she arrived, she was financially unstable and mentally stressed, but she believed coming to the U.S. was an opportunity to set her daughters up for success. While she had degrees from her home country, she did not know how to use them or if they would be valid so she set out to rebuild her career. Soon she learned about the growing field of biotechnology and was excited to try a new career path. Despite the many challenges presented when she arrived in a new country, Kamrunnaher is grateful that the scholarship from First Literacy will allow her to build a career in biotechnology. She is proud of what she has accomplished, and even more proud of the incredible role model she has become for her daughters.
