Persistence. That’s the key. For our scholars who have overcome so many barriers to get where they are today and yet still face more obstacles, for our teachers who are overwhelmed by the needs of the adult learners in their classrooms, for the programs that continue to look for new and innovative ways to teach Adult Basic Education and English Language Learning with not enough money or resources, it is persistence that matters.
Because of this, our team decided to share with you this year’s stories through the lens of persistence. As you read about the incredible people who are with us on this journey to help those who lack basic literacy skills get the support they need, notice the persistence that they all have.
Now more than ever, it is clear that First Literacy is needed. The National Center for Education Statistics recently reported that the number of adults in the U.S. who rank at the lowest levels of literacy has risen since 2017, from 19% to 28%. If this upward progression continues, it is not just individuals who will continue to suffer, but our entire nation.
As I think about all those who continue to strive for adult literacy, I am reminded by Maya Angelou’s poem, “And Still I Rise.” We cannot give up; we must keep moving forward.
So, here’s to our scholarship recipients, who inspire us with their determination to continue their education. Here’s to the Adult Basic Education and English Language Learners educators, who commit to coming to our free professional development workshops, in order to have a greater impact on their adult learners. Here’s to the programs that keep finding new and innovative ways to teach, using our small seed money to try out their ideas.
And here’s to all of you, who continue to support First Literacy. We couldn’t do any of this without you.
May you and your families have a happy and healthy 2025!
