In 2019, Nancary and her family came to the United States from the Dominican Republic to make a better life for themselves. Growing up with an absent father, her mother instilled in her and her four siblings that drive and perseverance are essential to excel in school. With this in mind Nancary was determined to repay her mother for the sacrifices she made. Enrolling in English classes, she sought to overcome the obstacles that came with adapting to a new country. The journey has not been easy or quick, but she continues to look to her mother’s hard work as a guiding light to be academically successful. Nancary plans to go to college to pursue a career as an accountant and provide her family with financial stability. A scholarship from First Literacy will alleviate some financial burden and allow Nancary the opportunity to take classes at Bunker Hill Community College.
