Nicole grew up in the Dominican Republic and dreamt of being a fashion designer. She had plans to pursue a college degree in marketing and graphic design in her home country, but two weeks before her program was about to start, Nicole received news that she and her family had to leave the Dominican Republic and move to the United States. Her plans changed very quickly, as she was about to leave behind her life as she knew it. When she arrived in the U.S. she didn’t know any English and had a hard time transitioning to life in a new country. After many months of dedication and hard work, Nicole reached an intermediate level of English and was able to get a job as an assistant preschool teacher. During this time she realized that being a teacher and helping others understand the world was her true calling. Nicole’s new dream is to become the best teacher that she can be, and she is confident in her new path forward. With the scholarship from First Literacy Nicole plans to attend Bunker Hill Community College and study Early Childhood Education.
