First Literacy Scholar: Oumaima

Oumaima was always talented in math and languages, learning English as a third language at the age of twelve. Unfortunately, cultural restrictions in Morocco kept her from testing her skills and expanding her experiences. When Oumaima came to the United States she was all alone and had to find a way and communicate with strangers. She soon found that she is interested in people, listening to them and exchanging stories. Her grandmother’s health crisis in Morocco inspired Oumaima to combine her social, math, and science skills to pursue a degree in nursing. She is looking forward to beginning classes at Bunker Hill Community College this fall.
