First Literacy Scholar: Sindi

Sindi grew up in the Dominican Republic, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in education and worked as an elementary school teacher. In her early twenties, she made the life-changing decision to move to the United States. When Sindi arrived in the U.S., she didn’t speak any English, which made adjusting to her new life especially challenging. However, her persistence and resilience carried her forward. She enrolled in the adult ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) program at Mount Wachusett Community College, steadily progressing through college-level reading and writing courses. With every step, her confidence in the language and in herself grew.

Now registered for college courses, Sindi is actively working toward her goal of earning a degree in Human Resources. She has witnessed firsthand how not knowing English can lead to unfair treatment, and she is determined to become the kind of HR professional people feel safe approaching, someone who understands their struggles and advocates for them with empathy and strength. A scholarship from First Literacy will support Sindi as she continues her education and gains the tools she needs to achieve her dream of working in Human Resources.
