HOW SUPPORTERS SOW SEEDS OF CHANGE THROUGH GENEROSITY AND VISION

Support comes in many forms—time, talent, and treasure—and each act of generosity has the power to change lives. At First Literacy, our donors are more than supporters; they are champions of a mission that changes the trajectory of adult learners and their families. Their dedication enables us to provide scholarships, fund innovative programs, and offer free professional development workshops to educators. This year, we celebrate the extraordinary life and legacy of Karen Morrissey, a donor, leader, and advocate who embodied the power of literacy and left an indelible mark on our organization.

Karen Morrissey: A Legacy of Literacy and Leadership

first-literacy-annual-report-2024-Karen-Morrissey-Donor-StoryKaren Morrissey was an extraordinary individual whose life was defined by her professional success, passion for education, and deep belief in the transformative power of literacy. Through her work with First Literacy, Karen touched countless lives, leaving a legacy of empowerment and hope that continues to inspire those who knew her.

Karen’s journey began with a degree in elementary education from Salem State University. Although a tight job market for teachers led her to pursue a corporate career, Karen never lost sight of her passion for helping others learn and grow. She brought this passion to every aspect of her life, combining her professional expertise with a heartfelt commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.

As her sister Janice recalled, Karen viewed literacy as much more than a skill; it was the foundation for a meaningful and fulfilling life. An avid reader herself, Karen believed that reading opened doors to self-expression, empowerment, and independence.

“Without literacy,” she often said, “one could feel lost in the world.”

Her dedication to this cause naturally led her to First Literacy, where she became an integral part of the organization’s mission to help adult learners overcome literacy barriers and achieve their goals.

Karen’s contributions to First Literacy were remarkable and impactful. Jeff Beale, a fellow board member, described her as a seasoned corporate professional whose expertise and leadership elevated the organization. She chaired the first-ever Development and Communications Committee, introducing innovative strategies and ideas that strengthened First Literacy’s outreach and fundraising efforts. Karen’s ability to connect with people from all walks of life made her a valued leader and a source of inspiration for her colleagues. Jeff fondly remembered her self-confidence and infectious “can-do” attitude, which motivated everyone around her to believe in their own ideas and abilities.

Karen lived each day with positivity and purpose. As Jeff shared, “She cared deeply about First Literacy and our scholars. Despite life’s difficulties, Karen always approached each day with a smile and an upbeat outlook on life.”

One of Karen’s favorite events each year was First Literacy’s Spelling Bee. Janice recalled how Karen would eagerly invite friends and family to join her, sharing the joy and purpose behind the event. The Spelling Bee brought together people from various industries to compete, raise funds, and celebrate First Literacy’s mission. It was a highlight of Karen’s year and a reflection of her passion for building community through literacy.

Karen’s legacy is one of empowerment, resilience, and generosity. She believed deeply in the power of education to transform lives and dedicated herself to ensuring others had the opportunity to experience that impact. As Janice beautifully put it …

“Karen’s life was defined by her unwavering commitment to sharing the gift of reading and her ability to make those around her feel valued and inspired.”

We are deeply grateful for Karen’s invaluable contributions to First Literacy and her enduring impact on our organization and the adult learners we serve. Her memory will continue to guide us as we work to fulfill the mission she cared so deeply about. This winter First Literacy will honor the life of Karen by renaming the First Literacy Professional Development Workshop space as The Karen M. Morrissey Workshop Room.
