First Literacy Grant Funded Project
Partner Program: International Institute of New England-Lowell
Project Description: This Family Literacy course combines beginner-level ESOL with basic literacy skill development to address the English language and literacy learning needs of adult Afghan women who have not yet developed literacy in their primary languages. Classes are taught by an experienced instructor in teaching ESOL supported by an Education Program Assistant and volunteers who speak Dari and Pashto to help clients develop the English proficiency needed to meet basic needs as they rebuild their lives in the U.S. Female evacuees who could not access literacy education in their home country of Afghanistan will engage in a more immersive learning experience, build community with peers, and find their voices as they rebuild their lives in the U.S.
