First Literacy is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Vitalis Osuji, M.D. MPH, to the board of directors. Dr. Osuji moved to the United States from Nigeria when he was 18 years old. When he arrived, he spoke only a few words of English but was filled with hopes of a better life and determination to achieve his end goal of becoming a doctor.
We recently caught up with two First Literacy Scholarship alumni, Lauretta Brennan and Luis Urbina, who both exemplify the transformative power of adult basic education. We wanted to learn where they are now since graduating and how their scholarship from First Literacy helped them get to where they are today.
Behind every First Literacy scholarship is a story of determination, resilience, and hope. This year’s scholars have overcome significant obstacles—from language barriers and financial hardship to personal loss and the challenges of starting over in a new country.
Luis moved to Boston in search of an opportunity to learn English and pursue a degree. He took English courses at Maverick Landing Community Services and secured an IT internship with Catholic Charities. Through these programs he learned about First Literacy, which allowed him to help fund his education.
On Friday, November 7th, First Literacy hosted the Spotlight on Innovation in Adult Basic Education. The annual event featured innovative new programs that are sparking change, testing fresh approaches, and opening doors for adult learners who are working hard to build better futures.
On September 17, The Boston Globe featured First Literacy scholar Wenley Jean Pierre. Wenley arrived in Boston from Haiti in May 2023. Now, more than 1,000 miles from home, he is determined to further his education and pursue a career in cybersecurity.
