Literacy impacts and is correlated with several important outcomes such as personal income, employment levels, health, and overall economic growth. Despite the profound implications, adult basic education (ABE) programs are vastly underfunded, especially by government sources.
First Literacy is pleased to announce the appointment of Lindsay Bishop to the board of directors. Bishop resides in Southborough and is a Partner at K&L Gates. Bishop joined the First Literacy Board effective July 1, 2025, and will serve alongside sixteen additional members of the board.

For parents who struggle with low literacy, staying on top of reading during the summer months can be challenging for both the child and parent.
First Literacy recently announced their 2025-2026 grant recipients. Eight organizations were awarded grants to carry out innovative initiatives that will impact adult learners across Massachusetts. In total, $38,523 in grant funds were distributed to nonprofits with new and innovative Adult Basic Education or English Language Learning projects.
Graduation marks more than just the end of a school chapter, for First Literacy scholars; it represents triumph over adversity, a renewed sense of purpose, and the beginning of new opportunities. This year, we proudly celebrate six scholars who earned college degrees and certificates despite facing immense challenges.
