On March 26, at First Literacy’s 36th annual Spelling Bee, Margarheeta Wise, President of MFS Service Center, will receive the “First Literacy Champion Award”. This award is being given in gratitude to Wise, a longtime supporter of First Literacy.

In Pursuit of a Better Life: Luis Marin Named Tom Brunnick Memorial Scholar
Luis moved to Boston in search of an opportunity to learn English and pursue a degree. He took English courses at Maverick Landing Community Services and secured an IT internship with Catholic Charities. Through these programs he learned about First Literacy, which allowed him to help fund his education.

A leap of faith: Building a future from Haiti to Boston
On September 17, The Boston Globe featured First Literacy scholar Wenley Jean Pierre. Wenley arrived in Boston from Haiti in May 2023. Now, more than 1,000 miles from home, he is determined to further his education and pursue a career in cybersecurity.
Twenty-nine Adult Learners Honored at Scholarship Ceremony
On August 27 the Office of Boston Mayor Michelle Wu hosted the 36th Annual First Literacy Scholarship Ceremony at Boston City Hall. The ceremony celebrated the 29 adult learners who were awarded First Literacy Scholarships for the 2025-2026 school year.
