An undiagnosed or untreated learning disability can be a challenging obstacle to overcome, especially for an adult looking to attain a high school diploma and further their education. Educators and Adult Basic Education programs are on the front lines and can play a role in identifying adult learners who are struggling with a learning disability.
Starting college is a big step, especially if you’ve recently earned your high school equivalency or completed an adult basic education program. It’s a big adjustment, as you’re getting used to a new environment, meeting deadlines, and balancing responsibilities, but one that you can make easier with some planning.
On August 15 the Office of Boston Mayor Michelle Wu hosted the 2024 First Literacy Scholarship Ceremony at Boston City Hall. The ceremony celebrated the 26 adult learners who were awarded First Literacy Scholarships for the 2024-2025 school year.
The World Economic Forum reports that only about half of people are financially literate. For adult learners who struggle with low literacy or do not speak the language and don’t know the financial rules of the country, becoming financially literate can be even more challenging.
This past June, First Literacy announced their 2024-2025 grant recipients. Seven organizations were awarded grants to carry out innovative initiatives that will impact adult learners across Massachusetts. In total, $40,661 in grant funds were distributed to nonprofits with new and innovative Adult Basic Education projects.
Bushrah was born in Uganda. A former investigative journalist, Bushrah worked for a prominent television station and faced persecution many times by the Ugandan government. In 2018, she made the difficult decision to leave her family and flee her country to save her life.
